The Ahtanum Orchid Culture (AOC) strives to provide the most rewarding orchid experience to our customers. We play close attention to the quality of the plants and to the quality of our supplies. We sell want we use in our orchid culture because we know that is what works for our “Or-kids.” Our intention is for our customers to be satisfied with their purchases each and every time.
Meet the Owners
Paul McCarthy – I have been involved in agriculture all of my life. My Ph.D. is in Plant Science, specializing in plant diseases, virology, and tissue culture from the University of Idaho. After many postdoctoral fellowships, I settled down in the Yakima valley and started growing orchids as a hobby, which turned into a compulsion! After five years of growing orchids, my wife, Gaye and I decided to start a small business bringing the best quality orchid and supplies for the local communities and you. We strive to also provide the best prices available in the Pacific Northwest! Currently we are a small supplier, but we are constantly growing and adding new orchids and supplies. So check back often and watch our progress.
I also have a tremendous love for animals and have a local feral cat rescue program. Currently there are 14 cats that have been trapped, fixed, and they are being taken care of for the rest of their lives. In addition, we try to find homes for them when possible. They cannot be handles but are great at keeping rodents away. Food is expensive and right now, I’m going through 16 pounds every 2 weeks. So if you want to donate…the organization is Hatton Creek Feral Cat Rescue Program.
Gaye McCarthy – I was raised on an apple and cherry farm in the Yakima valley where I was taught that providing the highest quality is what you always strive for. This ethic has fallowed me all of my life, providing the best quality materials and also providing you the best customer service possible. I have a business management degree from Heritage University and oversee the business site of our nursery. I have been a master gardener for 12+ years and I am the facilities Manager at the Yakima Area Arboretum, which has a wonderful collection of trees on 45 acres along the Yakima river. A great place to visit when you’re in Yakima. See the Yakima Area Arboretum’s website for more information.
